Ever wonder how you can make your family room or living room feel more cozy?
Modern spaces can feel a bit rigid while more traditional spaces can make you feel like you shouldn’t sit down. My grandmother used to have a plastic cover on her sofa so it wouldn’t get “soiled” as she’d say. Well I can’t tell you how many summer days I’d have to peel myself away from that sofa. That, my friends, is no way to give off cozy (sorry, Grandma).
If you’re going to welcome guests to your home, you want them to get those cozy vibes that speak to your care for them. So, let's talk about some ways to get your space cozy for your next gathering.
Faux Cake Focal Point
Let’s start with a centerpiece. A centerpiece is a focal point that can elevate (or diminish) the appearance of a space.
A centerpiece should be simple but beautiful, stylish but also add a personal touch. A vase with natural elements like flowers, pampas, or cherry blossom branches add interest. Adding a faux cake on a stand is a unique way to add height and interest to your centerpiece display. Use any of these mentioned centerpiece ideas with a couple of other elements for a vignette that gives vibes that speak to your own personal style. I share more ideas for styling your coffee table in my eBook.
Candlelit Ambiance
For a warm and beautiful ambiance, candles are my all around go to. I have them in the scattered around the dining room, sitting room and in the family room. I use tapers, containers, votive candles and even tea lights. I layer the heights and use them all around the room. The layering heights add interest and the glow is warm and so cozy.
Place your candles in varying holders that add more interest and you have a room that no one will want to leave.
Set a few lit candles next to your vase of flowers or your floral faux cake for an elegant mini vignette.

Comfortable Seating
Seating is one of the most important elements of a room, so it has to be cozy, especially when we have guests. Draping cozy throw blankets over seating and throw pillows to the sofa make an amazing way to add a snug feeling to make your living space cozy. Guests will feel amazing as they sink into comfort.
Another cozy tip for seating is to add extra throw pillows to your dining chairs. If you need extra seating in your sitting or living space, cushioned dining chairs are a great way to add extra comfort.
Extra Seating Cushions
If you prefer not to use your dining chairs in your living space, another way to add comfy seating for your guests is to add floor cushions or poufs. Just a note that if you have guests that have trouble sitting on the floor cushions (back, knee problems, etc.), prioritize the higher level sitting for them.
Ottomans are also ideal. We recently had a game night with a large crowd and ottomans and floor cushions saved that evening! These options added versatility without a large expenditure.

Lighting & Ambiance
Alongside candles and even as a standalone star, string lights are a magical addition to create a warm, inviting effect in your living space. Hang them gracefully along your shelves, draping them over books or décor to add a soft, twinkling glow, or weave them along your walls to frame the room with an enchanting aura. I’ve seen how these versatile lights transform a simple gathering into a cozy retreat. They’re perfect for busy hosts looking to impress without a lot of fuss. Adjust the length or cluster them in corners for a personalized touch, letting the gentle illumination captivate your guests with their effortless elegance.
Scented Diffuser Delight
Now let's talk aroma! It’s honestly one of my favorite elements to make a room cozy. Aroma comes in so many fun forms. Think candles, but also think simmering oil blends or diffuser oils. You may think I’m crazy, but I will still pull out a small potpourri pot and use it to simmer some aromatics just to get some good aroma going in my home. It works!
A quick tip: if you’re doing aroma, consider what you’ll be serving and coordinate your aroma so there’s no conflict in scents.
